Jim Vivian has been at the forefront of music making in Canada for over 25 years, with more than 25 recordings nominated for a Juno. Collaborators include national artists Mike Murley, Don Thompson and Steve Amirault, international artists including Kenny Wheeler, Norma Winstone and Dave Leibman.
Originally from Newfoundland, Jim moved from St. John’s to Toronto in 1979 to pursue classical bass studies, and during the early 1980′s began focusing more on jazz and improvised music.
An engaging, lyrical saxophonist, Mike Murley is one of Canada’s most celebrated and well-respected jazz artists. Currently active as a leader in various formations from duo to septet, Murley also maintains a busy schedule as both a sideman and an educator as Chair of the University of Toronto Jazz Program. He has played on twelve Juno Award-winning recordings since 1990, most recently in 2013 for his trio recording Test of Time (Cornerstone Records) and in 2017 for Metalwood’s Twenty (Cellar Live).
An experienced teacher, Jim is presently on faculty at the University of Toronto, York University, and the Humber College Community School
