Janet Cull – Hear It LP
It’s a challenging task to follow up on a great album and Janet Cull’s 2016 release, “Real Tough Love” was a rock-solid effort featuring the works of several local songwriters. So what next? The artist requires focus and commitment in order to achieve her intention and then it’s simply one foot in front of the other and trust your instincts.
Ms. Cull has done just that and in her liner notes she assures us that her heart, hurt, raw emotions and honesty poured out in these original songs. Perhaps the most significant factor with regard to comparing “Hear It’ with her prior album lies in these numbers being all originals. As accomplished as she is conveying the power and emotion of others words, there’s no interpretation involved in getting down to business in your own songs. Authenticity is the key and Janet has assembled a crack cast of musicians to help carry the message.
The album opens with an old-school spoken word intro leading us into a journey of ‘straight from the heart’ (and shoulder) lyrical messages. The band sets the tone for the entire album instantly, never overpowering the soulful, chameleon-like vocals.
The opening number, “The Only Thing Changing” serves as an anchor for the whole set, the arrangement delicate, balanced and pleasing both musically and vocally.
There is a smooth transition from track to track with “Hear It” embodying all the aesthetic qualities that are layered throughout an album that is both retro and contemporary. The easy, laid-back vibe of “I Wanna Know What Love Is” as well as “Long Gone” and “Sink Or Swim” echoes the sweet late 60’s/early 70’s sounds of Dusty Springfield.
The tuneful “I Turned Woman” resplendent with soft backing vocals, neatly wraps a bow on this very fine collection of originals.
Over the course of her career, Janet Cull has taken the lead as a performer and singer. She has employed the craftiness of both Joe Cocker and Janis Joplin at times as well as swaggering down the same sidewalks as Adele, Amy Winehouse and Alicia Keys. She’s spillin’ it and having a good time doin’ it. Make no mistake, Janet Cull is a boss and you can bet she has indeed achieved her intentions on this album.
